Handheld, Portable Radiation Instruments
Handheld, portable radiation detection instruments are very useful and often critical to the security of the United States and the rest of the free world. Vehicles at border crossings that triggered a non-spectroscopic portal must be examined for the accurate position of the radioactive material and more important, the identity of the radionuclide(s) present. Shipping containers still aboard a vessel often need to be surveyed for the presence of radioactive material. Suspicious, detained vehicles trying to enter a secure facility often need to be scanned for radioactive material or even weapons. In all of these cases and many more a handheld instrument capable of both detecting the presence of radioactive material and identifying the radionuclide(s) is of tremendous value. FLIR Radiation has developed and manufactures a comprehensive line of handheld radiation detection and identification instruments. Each instrument series has its own unique characteristics and capabilities from very small, belt worn to large, extremely sensitive. All of the FLIR Radiation handhelds are completely self-contained, requiring no external computational capability to operate and produce accurate results. Below is a brief description with graphic image of these instruments. Clicking on the instrument name will bring up a more detailed description with performance specifications.
nanoRaider™
The nanoRaider™ spectroscopic personal radiation detector (SPRD) is a pager-sized device with full detection and identification capabilities.
identiFINDER® 2
The identiFINDER 2 uses a scintillation detector, NaI or LaBr, to detect gamma radiation from radioactive material and identify the source. It features a full 64k color Transflective display that is readable even in direct sunlight; Bluetooth© wireless communication to a DUN capable cell phone for reachback transmissions; an accurate GPS to identify the incident location; web interface via USB emulated TCP/IP (LAN) to monitor or configure the identiFINDER 2; An embedded Windows CE operating system for enhanced computational power and much more. The identiFINDER 2 is the next generation instrument of the original identiFINDER.
identiFINDER®
The identiFINDER is the original handheld instrument designed and offered by ICx Radiation. It has been available for over ten years and there are 10,000+ deployed around the world today. The identiFINDER uses a scintillation detector, NaI or LaBr, to detect and identify radioactive material. It is ergonomically designed to be easy to hold in one hand and requires only three buttons to operate and/or access any menu item.
identiFINDER® UW
In response to a request by a customer for an identiFINDER capable of being dropped into and operate in sea water to a depth of 33’, ICx Radiation developed the Under-Water identiFINDER. Hundreds of these instruments are deployed aboard ocean vessels around the world today.
ironMAN™
The ironMAN was developed specifically for the scrap and recycling metal industry. It has a high sensitivity at low and high gamma energies making it ideal for the detection and location of medical and industrial sources that have been improperly discarded and ended up in a scrap metal recycling facility. Long half-life radioactive material can virtually ruin a scrap metal melting pot for ever. Any metal processed through the contaminated pot will pick-up radioactivity and will not be usable for anything reasonable. Replacing the expensive melting pot is the only viable solution.
Raider™
The Raider uses an array of solid-state CZT detectors to find the radioactive material and identify the radionuclide(s). It features a 64k color Transflective display that is readable even in direct sunlight plus a smaller OLED display for doserate and neutron count rate; Bluetooth© wireless communication to a DUN capable cell phone for reachback transmissions; built-in GPS to document the incident location; web interface via USB emulated TCP/IP (LAN) to monitor or configure the Raider; An embedded Windows CE operating system for enhanced computational power and much more.
radHUNTER™
The radHUNTER is the most sensitive handheld in the ICx Radiation lineup. It is provided with a large, 4” diameter by 0.75” thick NaI detector making it excellent for the rapid detection and location of radioactive material. Ergonomically designed for a comfortable grip it takes only two buttons to set-up and operate the radHUNTER. It features a 64k color Transflective display that is readable even in direct sunlight; Bluetooth© wireless communication to a DUN capable cell phone for reachback transmissions; built-in GPS to document the incident location; web interface via USB emulated TCP/IP (LAN) to monitor or configure the radHUNTER; an embedded Windows CE operating system for enhanced computational power and much more. The radHUNTER is ideal for border crossings that deploy non-spectroscopic portals. The truck is pulled over for further inspection. The radHUNTER is capable of detecting shielded radioactive material and identifying the radionuclide(s) in only a few seconds.
